Previously, customers who would send large files could experience a failed file transfer due to an interrupted file transfer session, requiring the user to restart the upload process. Web browser based file transfer sessions rely on uninterrupted Internet connections, with any drop in the connection resulting in a failed transfer state. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) usually emphasize their download speeds. Their upload speeds are generally much slower. These slower upload speeds can extend the file upload time for large files, increasing the likelihood of an interruption. A weak or intermittent wireless networking connection, Internet congestion, power save modes, and even an innocuous screensaver each have the capability to interrupt a file transfer. "We quickly identified that auto-resume would be an important feature," said John Stephens, Vice President of Operations.
